Description

If you've ever been to the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC, the 'Kwanzan' Flowering Cherry is the one on center stage. It is one of if not the most popular flowering cherry varieties around the world, for very good reasons. In early spring, an extraordinary explosion of showy, fully double, fragrant bright pink blossoms put on a spectacular show for longer than other flowering cherries, heralding the arrival of spring. As the bloom cycle is ending, new leaves emerge bronze. Large, arrow-shaped, glossy serrated leaves mature deep green tinged red in summer. Fall brings fiery shades of yellow, orange and red in fall.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright vase shape 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to mostly sunny landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, and wildlife gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  30 feet or more for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Kwanzan Flowering Cherry is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or mostly sun. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. No pruning is necessary though responds well to an annual pruning in late winter to control size or for shaping purposes.
