Description
If there ever was a rose that can bring on an obsession, 'Lady Emma Hamilton' might be the one at the very top of the list. The depths of rich color on the chalice-shaped blooms of this English Shrub Rose are absolutely out of this world. From late spring through fall, abundant dark red buds constantly open to a wonderful range of glorious orange, peach, apricot and golden yellow tones that change depending on weather. The fragrance is absolutely wonderful as well - strong and fruity with hints of pear, grape and citrus fruits, which compliments the flowers coloring. Marvelous for cutting and display in a vase. The blooms are held against very dark, purple-bronze new foliage that slowly become dark green and polished with age. The stems on this beauty can turn reddish and pretty as well. The growth is fairly upright but quite broad and bushy to about 4 feet tall and equally as wide. Extremely hardy, we've heard from folks in Phoenix that Lady Emma performs very well there even during the periods of merciless heat. A perfect choice for planting around patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Lady Emma Hamilton English Shrub Rose is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny borders and garden beds. Also nice in containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cottage gardens, orange or gold theme gardens, cutting gardens, antique and old-fashioned gardens, and fragrance and sensory gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Lady Emma Hamilton English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full to mostly sun for the best flowering. That said, some lightly filtered sun during the midafternoon hours is okay. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
