Description
A striking beauty and destined to be a queen in the sunny perennial border, the Lemon Queen Perennial Sunflower is an easy-to-grow North American native and recipient of the Garden of Merit Award by the Royal Horticultural Society. She forms a large, round bush up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, making her a perfect choice for the back of the border. Her stout stems are clothed in large leaves and covered with 2" wide glowing lemon-yellow daisy-like flowers from midsummer through midfall. It thrives in a sunny position with six or more hours of sunlight daily and moist to dry soils when established. Deer turn their nose up to it, but the butterflies and. beneficial pollinators flock to it. It's easy to see why Lemon Queen is one of, if not our top, favorites of the perennial sunflowers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Lemon Queen Sunflower is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a background plant in sunny perennial borders. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, meadow gardens, native gardens, wildflower gardens, and yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Lemon Queen Sunflower is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Avoid excessive fertilization to maintain a bushier plant and prevent stretching. It prefers a moist soil but has good drought tolerance when established. Maintenance is minimal. Prune annually in spring just after new growth begins to emerge.
