Description

This is a new one for us and we're not sure who discovered and named it, maybe "Leo"?... but we know it sure is a strong performer in our gardens, and the bright orange-red tubular flowers that were perfectly designed by Mother Nature will have the hummingbirds making a beeline to them. In late winter or very early spring, abundant flower clusters appear and continue over a long period through spring and then sporadically thereafter through fall and into winter. It's handsome blue-green round to elliptical leaves encircle the stems and are highly mildew resistant provided the vine gets the morning sun to dry dew from the leaves. The more sun this one get the heavier and longer the bloom. This native vine will not cling to and grow up walls but is excellent for growing on fences, arbors, arches, trellises and any other structures it can twine around.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 feet or more tall or long and 3 to 4 feet wide, Leo Trumpet Honeysuckle is an excellent addition to hummingbird gardens. But you don;t really need to make a hummingbird garden as wherever you plant this vine the hummingbirds will flock to it. It is ideal for use to climb along the top of fences, arches, arbors and perrgolas or on a trellis, pole, post or any other structure that will provide something for its vines to twine around.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences or other structures

Growing Preferences

Leo Honeysuckle is easily grown in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. The vine produces more flowers and is more vigorous in full sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Make sure to provide morning sun to dry the dew from leaves, which ensures no mildew on the foliage. It is quite drought tolerant when established and hardy in USDA Zones 4a-9b  Find Your Zone
