Description
Found and introduced in 1966 by J.W. Spingarn of Long Island, New York, 'Leprechaun' is perhaps the smallest growing of all Hinoki Cypress. Forming a diminutive pyramid 15 to 18 inches tall and equally as wide at the base when all grown up, he's an adorable little coniferous evergreen sporting dark emerald green foliage in tiny needled wavy sprays arranged in dense tiered layers. A wonderful texture plant in miniature gardens and containers and maintaining a bonsai look all on its own, Leprechaun is sure to be a conversation piece. Tends to prefer part shade, with some filtered sun or shade during the mid day hours. Morning and late afternoon and/or evening sun are fine.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense pyramidal form 15 to 18 inches tall and equally as wide at its base, the Leprechaun Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen in miniature gardens and pots, planted and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, fairy gardens, miniature gardens, rock gardens and Asian themed gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Leprechaun Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade. provide some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to remove a stray branch branchlet that is spoiling the shape of the plant. Provide a light application of slow release shrub and tree fertilizer in spring.
