Description
The Lime Martini Snowball Viburnum, sometimes called Japanese Snowball Bush, is a relatively rare and hard-to-find selection adored for its elegant beauty in form, flower color, and foliage. It is one of the showiest flowering shrubs in our gardens. It forms an upright, rounded vase shape about 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. The branches are clothed in handsome, deeply veined, rich green leaves through the season that turn to attractive red shades with the arrival of cool temperatures in fall. In mid to late spring, abundant rounded clusters of lime-green buds open to lime green flowers that age to crystal white. As the shrub grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small specimen tree. Lime Martini is one of those flowering shrubs that will always have you looking forward to spring for flowers and fall for foliage color.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Lime Martini Snowball Viburnum is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and flowering shrub borders. It is also lovely against a large open wall in home foundation plantings, or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive, small, focal point specimen tree. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens, Viburnum gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Lime Martini Snowball Viburnum is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and five or more hours of sunlight daily. It does not like constantly soggy or wet soil, which can cause problems with the roots. In our gardens here in Zone 8a of north-central Georgia, we've found it looks and performs its best with a little shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons. That said, it should do fine in Zones 5a to 7a in all-day sun.
