Description
Little Bluestem is a tough but pretty native ornamental grass that is so adaptable almost anyone anywhere in the country can grow it! It is an outstanding and super low maintenance selection for landscape sites with poor soil, low water, heat, humidity, and full sun. In addition to its value for its striking blue-green foliage, fall color, and low-maintenance properties, this native prairie grass provides seeds for birds. It is a host plant to many varieties of Skipper and other butterfly species. The foliage turns attractive shades of bronze, orange, and red in fall, contrasting beautifully with the downy white seeds. At 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, Little Bluestem is an excellent specimen for smaller garden spaces or in groupings or mass for a stunning show of color in larger landscape borders.
Wildlife Value
Little Bluestem is a host plant for numerous skipper butterflies, including the Cobweb Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Ottoe Skipper, Delaware Skipper, Crossline Skipper, and Swarthy Skipper.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, the Little Bluestem Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent in small garden spaces or in groupings or large drifts or mass plantings in larger landscape borders. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, blue theme gardens, native plant gardens, prairies, meadows, or naturalized areas. Because it is exceptionally drought tolerant when established it is also suited for xeriscaping.

Growing Preferences
Little Bluestem Grass is exceptionally easy to grow in well-drained soils of average to poor fertility with dry to medium moisture in full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, from clay to sandy, but does not like constantly soggy soil. Amend heavy clay soils to improve drainage. Once established, it has good drought resistance and tolerates both high heat and humidity. Cut plants back to just above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
