Description
Lozita has the darkest leaves we've seen on a Japanese Maple, nearly black. The palmate leaves emerge red in spring and turn blackish maroon in summer when the tree gets 6 hours or more of direct sunlight daily. Upon closer observation, some of the leaves have prominent green veins. The arrival of cooler temperatures in fall brings bright scarlet red shades. The bark on the stems and branches is a dark maroon that looks almost black during the winter. Lolita is an upright grower with a rounded vase form that might reach 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide in 10 years and maybe 20 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide when all grown up. Excellent as a focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It can also be grown in a large pot for situating on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Lozita Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape or containers as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific home or landscape area. That said, it can be grouped in larger landscape spaces, or you can use two to frame an entrance.
Suggested Spacing: At least 18 feet for space between trees; Keep trunk 6 feet away from home foundation plantings
Note: One Japanese maple can make a landscape if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won't interfere with your tree.
Growing Preferences

Japanese Maples are understory trees in their natural habitat, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally, they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, 'Lozita' will grow in full to mostly sun.
Japanese maples will grow in most any average garden soil. They prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
