Description

Unlike other Dicentra species that go dormant in the summer, the Luxuriant Fern Leaf Bleeding Heart, Dicentra eximia 'Luxuriant', is a North American native perennial that keeps its beautiful foliage all season long, and blooms much longer as well. 'Luxuriant' features a low mound of deeply-cut, fern-like, soft-textured grayish green foliage from which rise leafless stems bearing cerise-pink, nodding, heart-shaped flowers. Protruding inner petals of the flower appear to form a drop of blood at the bottom of each heart-shaped flower, hence the common name of bleeding heart. The bloom begins in late spring and continues through summer in cool-summer climates. In hot-summer climates the flowering generally ceases during summer with a rebloom in fall when temperatures cool down. Forming a mound to 15 inches tall and 18 or so inches wide, Luxuriant provides a luxurious accent in shady small garden spaces or groupings or as a border where space allows.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 inches tall and up to 18 inches wide, the Luxuriant Bleeding Heart is ideal for use as an accent in small garden space or in small to large groupings in larger spaces. Very nice near the garden pond, in woodland settings, along shady paths or anywhere there is partial shade to shade. A fine addition to hummingbird gardens, pink theme gardens and woodland gardens.

Spacing:  15 inches apart for groupings or solid borders; 30 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Luxuriant Bleeding Heart is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in part shade to full shade. Filtered sun or shade during the afternoon is suggested. It prefers a consistently moist, humusy soil but not a constantly soggy or wet one. Feed in early spring with an organic plant food. No pruning is necessary. Water as needed to maintain a damp to moist soil. May self-seed in optimum growing conditions.
