Description

Picea glauca 'Mac's Gold' is a very handsome selection of our North American native White Spruce that flushes bright golden new growth in spring. It simultaneously produces contrasting small red cones that add further to the spring appeal. The wands of thick evergreen needles mature to a rich gray-green throughout the rest of the year. A moderate grower adding 12 to 15 inches in height per year, it forms a somewhat open pyramid to around 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide at its base on average. A fine accent tree in small to medium-sized landscape spaces or to frame the corners of taller homes, structures, and entrances. It can also be grown in containers on patios and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a captivating beauty that always has you looking forward to spring for the glowing foliage color show.

Note: 'Mac's Gold' and 'McConnell's Gold' are the same plant, with the scientific name Picea glauca 'Mac's Gold'.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Mac's Golden White Spruce is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or spaced grouping in sunny landscape borders or as an accent or to frame the corners in home foundation plantings and other structures. Very nice in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces, however might eventually need transplanting to the landscape. A nice accent in privacy screen plantings. A fine addition to conifer gardens, native plant gardens, rock gardens and yellow theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Use as a focal point specimen or in spaced groupings at 15 feet mor more apart

Growing Preferences

The Mac's Gold White Spruce is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Moderate drought tolerance when established. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary except to prune a stray stem or branch spoiling the shape of the tree.
