Description
An impressive, large growing Lilac up to 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide, 'Madame Lemoine' is a French hybrid adored for her abundant clusters of soft chartreuse buds that open to pure white double petaled flowers. The flowers stand out remarkably well against the backdrop of rich green, heart-shaped leaves. As with other lilacs, the flowers are delightfully fragrant filling the yard with heavenly sweet aroma in spring, and you can cut a few to display in your favorite vase. Excellent in the flowering shrub border or as a specimen or background in sunny landscape borders. Needless to say, it's perfect around patios, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. Carefree, deer resistant and gorgeous, the Madame Lemoine Lilac is one of those plants that will always have you looking forward to spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Madame Lemoine French Lilac can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a magnificent small tree. As a shrub it serves well as a specimen as a hedge or background. As a tree it is ideal for use as a specimen in landscape borders, home foundation plantings or around patios, decks, porches and outdoor sitting and living spaces where the beautiful flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, butterfly gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedges; 15 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Madame Lemoine Lilac is easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Prefers a neutral to alkaline soil pH (6.5-8.0). Add pelletized agricultural lime to sweeten acid soils. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as necessary right after bloom in spring.
