Description

An easy-to-grow North American native, Dryopteris filix-mas, commonly called Male Fern, is an elegant beauty with large, medium green, erect and arching fronds that from an impressive clump to 3 feet tall and equally as wide. This is one will thrive in those heavily shaded areas of the garden where not many other plants will. An excellent and reliable long-lived fern for the shade or woodland garden that combines beautifully with Hosta, heuchera and many other shade loving perennial plants.


Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Male Fern is ideal for use as an accent in heavily shaded to partially shaded smaller garden spaces or in groupings or mass plantings in shade or woodland gardens. Also a nice accent in home foundation plantings or large container gardens. A fine addition to woodland gardens, native gardens streambank gardens and rain gardens.


Growing Preferences

The Male Fern is easy to grow in a variety of moist but well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. It prefers a consistently moist soil rich in organic matter however will tolerate short dry periods when established.
