Description
A North American native flowering perennial that will grow almost anywhere in the country (USDA Zones 3-9), the Mariacha 'Sombrero' Helen's Flower features a stunning display of eye-catching daisies with bright golden yellow petals surrounding a darker golden-brown center cone. The flowers are loved and appreciated by the late-season butterflies and are excellent for cutting and use in fresh floral arrangements. Sombrero is a member of the Mariachi Series of dwarf varieties that were bred to be consistently shorter and more well-behaved in the garden. Striking in the garden and containers or when planted in among ornamental grasses.
Interesting Note
The other common name for this plant is Sneezeweed, but not because it'll make you sneeze by simply being in the garden, it won't. This common name is based on the former use of its dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to cause sneezing that would supposedly rid the body of evil spirits.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, Sombrero Helen's Flower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spacers and containers or in grouping or in drifts in sunny perennial or woodland borders. It combines especially well with ornamental grasses. A fine addition to wildflower gardens, native plant gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, yellow theme gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Helen's Flower is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. For best flowering and density of foliage we suggest at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with bagged top soil or other organic matter to ensure good drainage. Plants can be cut back after going dormant for winter or in late winter. Feed as directed on the product label with a good flower food or organic flower food.
