Description
Introduced by renowned camellia breeder William L. Ackerman, Maroon Mist is a rare, stunning hybrid Camellia cross of C. japonica 'Tricolor Red Siebold' and C. oleifera 'Plain Jane'. In late winter and early spring, it displays abundant, large, single to semi-double flowers up to 6 inches across, with lightly ruffled maroon-red petals surrounding a prominent patch of bright golden anthers. The lustrous, dark green foliage is an excellent background for the blooms. A sensational Camellia for the shade to part sun garden that will always have you looking forward to its spring bloom!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, depending on pruning, the Maroon Mist Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders, and is especially lovely as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As this camellia grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a beautiful, small evergreen tree that serves well as a focal point in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, Asian gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and woodland gardens and borders.
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellias adapt well to various soil types; however, they prefer a moist, well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom better in partial shade. They do NOT like direct afternoon sun. So choose a location with morning and/or evening sun but filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. All-day filtered sun is fine.
