Description
A color factory that the hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will thank you for planting, the Maroon Swoon Weigela is covered with funnel-shaped dark red flowers in spring and early summer and will rebloom if the plant is lightly trimmed after flowering. Sure to be an attention-getter, the flowers contrast remarkably well with the rich green foliage. Like all Weigela, Maroon Swoon is exceptionally low maintenance and easy to grow given a sunny position and well-drained soil. You might be happy to know that the deer turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Maroon Swoon Weigela is ideal for use as an accent in home foundation plantings, groupings, or as a low hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. It is a fine addition to hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, flower gardens, perennial gardens, and red-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 to 4 feet apart for hedge; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Weigela is very easy to grow in almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Flowering is best in full to mostly sun, though plants will tolerate some light shade, especially in the warmer southern regions where it grows. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight daily for best flowering. It requires no pruning; however, it responds well to it. A light trimming after flowering encourages rebloom.
