Description
One of if not the fastest growing and showiest Camellias in our gardens, 'Marti' can be grown as a large shrub or very attractive and colorful evergreen flowering tree that will be around 15 feet tall when all grown up. In fall, she puts on a fantastic color show displaying abundant and very pretty single to slightly semi-double 2 to 3 inch clematis-like flowers with bubblegum-pink petals. The somewhat crepe-like petals surround a prominent boss of bright yellow stamens. An evergreen beauty in and out of bloom!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to around 15 feet tall and around 8 feet wide , the Marti Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub, Marti is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a hedge or background plant. As she grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small evergreen specimen tree. A fine addition to Camellia gardens, pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, and partially shaded woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
