Description

Exceptionally cold hardy to -20 degrees F, 'Mary Poppins' Deciduous Azalea is an outstanding selection from the Knaphill Rhododendron series that produces large rounded clusters containing up to 30 delightfully fragrant, brilliant orange-red trumpet flowers with golden highlights. A mesmerizing sight to behold in flower. Adding to the overall appeal, after the flowers comes attractive deep bronze new leaves that mature to a very handsome deep green. We're not absolutely sure but this selection may be grown in Zone 9 provided there's ampel shade during the late morning and afternoon hours. The plant itself has a rounded shape 3 to 4 feet tall and equally wide. Plant this magnificent beauty near windows or close to patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Mary Poppins Azalea is perfect for use an accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in clusters or as a natural hedge in woodland borders or other shady to partially shaded areas. Also useful in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to azalea and rhododendron gardens, orange theme gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for a solid hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Rhododendron variety is not winter hardy, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

The Mary Poppins Azalea is very easy to grow. It prefers moist but well-drained humus rich soil and morning sun with afternoon shade or all-day dappled shade. Deciduous azaleas are very low-maintenance requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is spoiling the natural form of the plant.
