Description

A female Winterberry Holly adored for her stunning, profuse display of brilliant bright red berries that persist throughout the winter months, 'Maryland Beauty' is an upright growing multi-trunk deciduous holly that reaches 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide. Lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. Being an early flowering female, she will require an early flowering male pollinator nearby to produce berries, such as 'Jim Dandy'. One male winterberry will be sufficient for pollinating 6 to 10 female shrubs. Lustrous dark green leaves up to 3 inches long turn colorful yellow to bronze shades in fall. Very easy to grow and adaptable, as with all other winterberry hollies, Maryland Beauty will thrive in full sun to part shade, light or heavy soils, and prefers life on the moist side, even tolerating wet soil in swampy areas where not much else will grow. An outstanding specimen, grouping or hedge that provides eye-popping color in the winter landscape, and the berries are a great food source for birds!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide, when pollinated by an early flowering male such as 'Jim Dandy', the Maryland Beauty Winterberry Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and native areas with moist but well drained or even wet soils. Perfect along the swamps, bogs and banks of streams, ponds and other bodies of water. A fine addition to bird gardens, berry gardens, bog gardens, wetland gardens, red color theme gardens and native habitats.

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Winterberry hollies are very easy to grow in consistently moist to wet acidic soil of average or better fertility. They are adaptable to both light and heavy soils and will even grow well in poorly drained soils including boggy, wet conditions. Generally one male winterberry holly will be sufficient for pollinating 6 to 10 female plants. Flowers are born on new growth so you can prune to shape in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
