Description

Discovered by nurseryman Masashi Shibamachi in Japan, Masashi's Gold Holly is much like its Burfordi cousin, but with outstanding, lustrous, fluorescent golden-yellow foliage that makes it a beacon in the landscape, standing out from hundreds of feet away. Much like its cousin, the Dwarf Burford Holly, in growth habit, it forms a dense, rounded shrub 4 to 8 feet tall and wide, depending on pruning. It responds very well to pruning, allowing it to be clipped into a formal hedge if desired. If left to grow naturally, as it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form an attractive, small tree that is stunning and suitable for use as a focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. In late spring, it produces clusters of small, white flowers at the stem tips, which pollinators will appreciate, that are followed by clusters of bright red berries.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 8 feet tall and wide (depending on pruning), the Masashi's Gold Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural or formal hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a beautiful, small evergreen tree that serves as a focal point specimen or in groupings in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to yellow theme gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, formal gardens, and Asian theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedge; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Masashi's Gold Holly is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade; however, more sun brings brighter foliage color and more berries. Four or more hours of direct sunlight is recommended. No pruning is necessary; however, it responds well to pruning for creating formal shapes and hedges, or for shaping into a tree form. Note that heavy pruning after spring flowering may affect berry production. Therefore, we recommend pruning in late winter.
