Description

This is the rare single-ball single-trunk patio tree topiary version of the Meta Japanese Yew. This highly adaptable and ornamental evergreen will grow in full sun or heavy shade. It features dark green needle-like leaves that provide a unique and distinctive texture in the landscape. Meta is a somewhat slower-growing version of the species with a very dense habit, requiring only 1 to 2 trimmings per year to maintain its form. All grown up, it might reach 6 to 7 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, depending on pruning. It is excellent as an accent tree in sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings, where two can be used to frame an entrance. A very tough, adaptable and handsome plant that thrives in the most adverse conditions, it is deer, drought, heat, and humidity tolerant. In colder climates, it can be grown in a solarium or in containers that are overwintered indoors and moved back outdoors when temperatures warm in spring.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Meta Japanese Yew Single Ball Patio Tree is ideal as a focal point in small to mid-size sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance.  It is also suitable as a centerpiece in a container garden. Its high drought tolerance makes it a fine selection for the Xeriscape (low water needs) garden. In cold climates, Maki Podocarpus can be grown in a sunny solarium or containers overwintered indoors and moved back outdoors when temperatures warm in spring. It can even be grown as a year-round house plant!

Spacing:  Best as a specimen or use 2 to frame an entrance

Growing Preferences

Meta Japanese Yew Patio Tree is a very tough and handsome plant that thrives in the most adverse conditions, tolerating an expansive range of soils and light exposures, growing well in full sun or shade. When young, it prefers a moist but well-drained soil; however, it is exceptionally drought tolerant when established. It does not like constantly soggy or wet soils. Very alkaline or heavy soils may cause nutrient deficiencies. As with many other acid-loving evergreens, if the foliage turns a lighter shade of green, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron for deep greening. It can be clipped once yearly for a shaggy globe look or two to three times yearly for a more formal, tight appearance.
