Description
A extremely cute Ajuga that will not go unnoticed in the garden, 'Metallica Crispa', what we call Purple Spinach Ajuga, slowly forms an attractive patch of heavily crinkled spinach-like leaves in shades of purple and deep green with a metallic finish. In late spring through early summer 4 to 6 inch spiked clusters of lipped purplish blue flowers rise above the foliage for an extra bonus. Slowly spreading to maybe a foot wide in 2 to 3 years with foliage to 3 inches high, Metallica Crispa is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and combination container gardens, or in groupings or as a gap-filler between stepping stones in a partially shaded path. Very nice in rock gardens. We've found it to be extremely heat tolerant and resistant to powdery mildew in our north-central Georgia gardens. You might be happy to know that Ajuga can be grown under black walnut trees, is deer resistant, and will thrive in well-drained clay soil.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 inches tall and spreading to 12 inches or more to form a patch, Metallica Crispa Ajuga is ideal for use as an accent in miniature gardens and small spaces or pots, planters and other containers. Also ideal for use as a spreading border along paths and walkways, as a groundcover to fill in around shrubs in home foundation plantings and woodland areas, as a gap and crevice filler between pavers and stones, as an underplanting for shrubs and trees, tucked around boulders in rock gardens, or as a soil cover in combination container gardens. With consistently moist soil, we hear this variety will tolerate full sun in the South.

Growing Preferences
Metallica Crispa is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade. We suggest some shade or filtered sun during the midafternoon. That said, we hear it will tolerate full sun provided there is adequate soil moisture. It will tolerate wet periods but not a constantly wet soil or standing water.
