Description
A sport from the ever-popular, but larger growing 'Gold Mound' Spirea, 'Mini Gold' is a rare, tiny version that grows to only 18 inches tall by 24 inches wide when all grown up. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for mightily with brilliant foliage color and flower power. As a bonus, in late spring, abundant domed, fuzzy-looking clusters of pink flowers are perched just above the foliage on just about every stem, contrasting beautifully with the foliage and attracting butterflies and beneficial pollinators. By summer, the foliage turns to a golden chartreuse. Its more diminutive stature makes Mini Gold a perfect fit as a glowing accent in small garden spaces or containers, or in groupings or as a low border or hedge in sunny borders and perennial gardens. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established and cold hardy to -30F, what more can we ask for in a flowering shrub?
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a low, rounded mound to 18 inches tall and 24 inches wide, Mini Gold Spirea is ideal for use as a bright accent in small garden spaces or stunning groupings or as a low border or hedge. It does very well on sunny slopes, and is a great underplanting for small trees such as Japanese maples or Crape Myrtles, just make sure there's enough sun exposure. It is also lovely as a front-facing plant to taller evergreens in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to gold or yellow theme gardens, butterfly gardens, rock gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens, perennial gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).
Spacing: 18 inches for mass plantings; 3 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Mini Gold Spirea is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. It will grow fine with less exposure, but the foliage might be more chartreuse than yellow. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant. A light shearing of spent flowers after the summer bloom encourages rebloom. It flowers on new wood, so prune in late winter to early spring if desired. Older plants can be cut back to the ground in late winter for rejuvenation.
