Description

Meet Mood Ring Podocarpus, another fine selection from the Southern Living Plant Collection. Whenever Mood Ring flushes new growth during the season, which is from spring well into fall, they young leaves are a striking bronze pink! These new leaves mature to a deep green, which then serves as the perfect backdrop to show off the next flush of colorful new growth. Excellent as a natural or clipped formal hedge!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide makes the Mood Ring Podocarpus ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural or clipped formal hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. Also nice as an accent or to frame the corners in home foundation plantings. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens and formal gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for a solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Podocarpus is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers which can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Podocarpus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun or part shade. It does not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil and is very drought and heat tolerant when established. Plants can be trimmed occasionally for shaping purposes. Cease pruning two months prior to the average first-frost date in your area.
