Description

'Nadezhda' is a superb Lilac bred in Russia for its prolific, large clusters of incredibly fragrant, fully double flowers and sturdy upright, rounded habit. It can reach up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide when fully grown. The long-lasting, stunning, light lilac-blue flowers that open from rosy-purple buds smother the bush mid-spring, filling the garden with heavenly perfume, and are perfect for cutting and displaying in a vase or floral arrangement. Easy to grow and super cold hardy to -40F, Nadezhda is an excellent specimen in sunny landscapes and woodland borders or as an accent in home foundation plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Nadezhda Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. It is also a nice accent in home foundation plantings and near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living spaces where the beautiful flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, or purple or blue theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5 feet apart for solid hedges; 9 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Nadezhda Lilac can be grown in USDA Zones 3a-7b in hot summer climates and Zones 3a-8b 8b in cool summer climates. It is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil and, preferably, six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil, so apply pelletized lime if your soil is highly acidic. Fertilize once in early spring with a light application of organic plant food or slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer. Prune as desired after bloom in spring.
