Description
An extremely handsome evergreen flowering shrub to delight the senses, Napoleon is a compact Cherry Laurel that reaches maybe 3 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up. It is densely clothed in dense, deep green high-gloss foliage and shows off abundant, showy spiked clusters of wonderfully fragrant pure-white flowers in spring. Its well-behaved habit, low maintenance requirements, and polished look make it perfect for a home foundation plant, a low hedge or grouping in sunny or shady landscape borders, or in containers. It requires much less trimming than other varieties, such as 'Otto Luyken,' to maintain its dense, rounded form. Easy care, deer resistance, high drought tolerance when established, and thriving in sun or shade...what more can we ask for from a flowering shrub?
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Napoleon Cherry Laurel is ideal for use as an accent shrub in small garden spaces or in groupings in sunny or shady home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It is also very nice in containers for situating on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is fine addition to fragrance gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedges or groupings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Napoleon Cherry Laurel is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter and full sun to mostly shade. Well-drained soil is essential. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. In our north-central Georgia gardens, we've had success growing cherry laurels in almost full shade. No pruning is required though the plant responds well to it for shaping purposes and formal hedges.
