Description

As its name suggests, NewGen Freedom is a next-generation Boxwood bred for high resistance to boxwood blight, a disease affecting boxwoods in specific parts of the country due to particular climatic conditions. Vigorous for a boxwood, Freedom adds up to 6 inches in height and width per year, forming a globe of handsome, glossy green foliage to 5 feet tall and wide over time. That said, as with other boxwoods, it responds very well to pruning, allowing it to be maintained at half its mature height over time with annual pruning or shearing in late winter. This can be used to form various geometrical shapes or tight, formal hedges, making it a fine selection for home foundation plantings. It is highly adaptable, thriving in full sun or shade, and is easy to grow, as well as deer-resistant. Its inconspicuous but fragrant spring flowers are attractive to beneficial pollinators.

Landscape & Gardens Uses

Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, depending on pruning, the NewGen Boxwood is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural or formal hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is also well-suited for growing in containers. It is a fine addition to formal gardens, English gardens,  beneficial pollinator gardens, topiary gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid hedge; 7 feet or more feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The NewGen Freedom Boxwood is easy to grow in a wide range of soils but prefers a moist, well-drained loam. It will grow well in full sun or partial shade, though the foliage will be denser with more sun. In our gardens, we have one growing in almost full shade under a large oak tree, and it's doing fine. When grown in full sun, the foliage takes on a bronze cast in winter. To maintain a denser and fuller plant, we recommend annual pruning in late winter or spring, after the new growth has fully emerged and hardened off. At this time, the new growth can be cut back by half its length. To avoid damage to new growth that can be stimulated by pruning, cease pruning two months before the average first-frost date in your area.
