Description

Just when you think winter is over and all chance of snow has passed, this beautiful little dwarf mounding Deutzia to 24 inches tall and 4 to 5 feet wide becomes covered in abundant, pretty, fragrant, creamy white five-petaled flowers with yellow stamens at the center. The mound is clothed in rich, green foliage that turns a deep burgundy-red in the fall. It is excellent as an accent shrub, in a grouping or border, and looks lovely cascading over a wall. You might be happy to know that in our gardens the deer haven't touched it.

Landscape / Garden Uses

Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the arching stems of Nikko Dwarf Deutzia will root where they touch the ground, making it a fine selection for mass plantings, groupings, or as a low border.. Its smaller size fits perfectly in smaller garden spaces or containers that can be situated and enjoyed on or around patios, decks, and porches. It is especially nice cascading over walls and makes a fine addition to cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, and white-themed gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  36 inches apart for mass planting; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Nikko Dwarf Deutzia is very easy to grow in a wide range of soils, including clay, but prefers a moist, well-drained humusy loam and full sun to part shade. In hot summer climates, it will appreciate filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. It does not require pruning; however, an annual pruning immediately after the spring bloom can be done for shaping purposes and to enhance foliage density. Just make sure to prune right after bloom.
