Description

Introduced by Buddy Lee, the most respected Azalea breeder in the United States, Northlake Beauty in sun, heat and humidity tolerant evergreen Southern Indica with beautiful variegated flowers that come in two tones on the same bush. In spring, light pink to soft pink or nearly white flowers with petals striped and speckled in darker pink, and a splotch of freckles on the upper petal, are produced in such abundance they nearly cover the evergreen foliage. As with other Rhododenron indicum varieties, Northlake Beauty sports large, arrow-shaped, rich green leaves that are attractive year round on a large mounding shrub to 8 feet high and wide if left to grow naturally with no pruning but has demonstrated greater cold tolerance to USDA Zone 6. Excellent as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound 5 to 8 feet tall and equally feet wide, depending on pruning, the Northlake Beauty Azalea is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and flowering shrub borders. Also useful in home foundation plantings that will accommodate its larger stature.. A fine addition to azalea and rhododendron gardens, pink theme gardens, Asian theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  6 feet apart for solid hedges;  12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Northlake Beauty Azalea is easy to grow and care for in a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. Morning sun with some filtered or afternoon shade is ideal. Azaleas do not like wet feet so avoid planting them in sites where soil stays constantly soggy or wet. Good drought tolerance when established.
