Description
The Orange Cinnabar Rhododendron features abundant, stunning clusters of bell-shaped flowers with light orange waxy petals tinged in golden yellow and rose. It forms an upright shrub 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, clothed in elliptic to oval-shaped fragrant dark green evergreen leaves with a metallic, grey-green sheen and the scent of cinnamon. Like other rhododendrons, it thrives in a well-drained acidic soil in partial shade. We suggest morning sun with filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. It is a beautiful specimen, grouping, or natural hedge in the partially shaded woodland border.
Rhododendron cinnabarinum is a rhododendron species native to eastern Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, southeastern Tibet, and southwest China.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, the Orange Cinnabar Rhododendron is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in partially shaded woodland borders or other areas of the landscape that provide filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. We suggest 3 to 6 hours of sunlight per day for best flowering and foliage density. Is also suitable for growing in large pots, planters, and other containers. A fine addition to woodland gardens, orange theme gardens, Azalea and Rhododendron gardens, woodland gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Orange Cinnabar Rhododendron is easy to grow in moist but well-drained acid, humus-rich soil, and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. We suggest 3 to 6 hours of direct or indirect sunlight per day for the best flowering and foliage density and a soil pH ranging from 4.0 to 6.0. No pruning is required. That said, a stray branch spoiling the look of the plant can be removed if desired, but not so much pruning to the plant that it would spoil the natural form of this beautiful shrub.
