Description
A member of the KALEIDOSCOPE™ Delosperma series, as its name suggests, Orchid Flash Hardy Ice Plant was bred by Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens for its large flowers and enhanced cold hardiness, allowing it to thrive in USDA Zone 5b, where temperatures can drop to -15°F. It forms a dense carpet of succulent, rich green foliage, 2 to 3 inches tall, 4 inches in bloom, and 24 or more inches wide, making it a great choice as a border, grouping, groundcover, or spiller plant in container gardens. From late spring through summer, the foliage carpet is smothered in dark lavender-pink, quilled flowers 2 inches across, which butterflies and beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Easy to grow, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant. Like other ice plants, Orchid Flash requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight for optimal bloom and overall performance. Its low water needs make it excellent for the xeric garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to around 2 to 4 inches tall and spreading 18 to 24 inches wide, the Orchid Flash Ice Plant is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or in combination container gardens. It can also be used in groupings or massed along the borders of walkways, paths, patios, and garden beds. Very nice around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to succulent and cactus gardens, rock gardens, purple theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass planting

Growing Preferences
When planted right and in the right spot, the Orchid Flash Hardy Ice Plant is very easy to grow. It requires well-drained, lightly moist to dry soil and is highly drought-tolerant when established. It will tolerate rainy periods, but constantly soggy or wet soil is a killer, so make sure to plant in a well-draining site. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best overall performance.
