Description
The Paperbark Maple is a relatively small tree that grows in a rounded to oval form with upright branches 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. Perhaps the most outstanding and striking feature is the distinctive and elegant papery sheets of peeling bark that reveal cinnamon or reddish brown to coppery orange new bark. The curling bark remains on the tree long term rather than dropping to the ground. The trees stems are clothed in trifoliate soft to olive green leaves that turn vivid orange and red shades in mid to late fall persisting into winter. An excellent accent tree in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and a beautiful accent around patios and other outdoor sitting areas and living spaces. Easy to grow, the Paperbark Maple thrives in most any well-drained soil, including clay, and is drought tolerant when established and disease and insect resistant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Typically growing up to 20 to 30 feet in height by 15 to 25 feet wide, the Paperpark Maple is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a screen or to delineate property lines or line a driveway. Space at least 12 feet from a drive or walkway. Also nice to provide shade near the home or around near sitting areas, to frame the corners of homes and other structures, and for reforestation projects. A fine addition to wildlife gardens and sunny woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing: 20 feet apart for screens; 40 feet or more apart for space between trees; space trees at least 12 feet from a drive or walkway
Growing Preferences
The Paperbark Maple is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soils of average fertility, including clay soil, and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. Established trees are quite drought tolerant. That said, in hot-summer climates it will appreciate an occasional drink during extended periods of summer drought.
