Description

Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, forming a pointed column 5 to 6 feet tall and only a foot wide when all grown up, the Pencil Point Juniper is the perfect vertical accent for a small garden space or as a centerpiece in containers. The dense pointed column is clothed in attractive blue-green needles that develop a copper-bronze tint during the winter. Easy to grow, extremely hardy and low-maintenance, the Pencil Point Juniper can handle temperatures to -50F and thrives in a variety of soil types including poor rocky soils. Hardy in USDA Zones 2a-6b. 


Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and only 1 foot wide, the Pencil Point Juniper is a fine vertical accent and exclamation point in small garden spaces, home foundation plantings, miniature conifer gardens or containers. It can also be planted 2 feet or more apart in spaced groupings or as a narrow hedge. An excellent addition to Asian Gardens, Conifer Gardens, Rock Gardens, Xeriscape Gardens (Low Water Needs).

Suggested Spacing:  10 to 12 inches apart for a solid hedge; 2 feet or more apart for space between plants


Growing Preferences

The Pencil Point Juniper is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility, including poor rocky soils. It is very drought tolerant when established and prefers full sun to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It is a very low maintenance plant with no pruning required to maintain its dense and narrow form.
