Description
This shorter variety of Joe Pye Weed is fantastic for use in smaller garden spaces and mixed containers or groupings in larger perennial borders and rain gardens. From mid-summer through fall it produces abundant pretty dome-shaped clusters of tiny, rosy-purple flowers that are a favorite of butterflies at a time when not as many other flowering plants are blooming. Slightly vanilla scented on warm days, in our gardens the flowers always seem to covered in butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Tufts of fuzzy seed heads following the flowers provide late autumn interest in the garden. Easy to grow in a sunny position with consistently moist soil, Phantom forms an upright clump 3 to 4 feet tall and equally wide clothed in whorls of coarse green leaves on red-purple, sturdy stems. The Chicago Botanic Garden trialed Phantom for six years and found this variety to be disease-resistant and have excellent flower production with 80-100% flower coverage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, the Phantom Joe Pye Weed is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or containers or in groupings in larger perennial borders. It likes a consistently moist soil, so it is a great choice for planting in those areas of the garden where the soil tends to stay moist. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, purple theme gardens, and consistently moist bog and meadow gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 3 feet apart for groupings; 6' or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Phantom Joe Pye Weed is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained humusy soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. It can take drier conditions but does prefer average soil moisture conditions. During dry spells, leaves may scorch if the sooil is allowed to completely dry out. While there might be an urge to cut back the plants stems to the ground in late winter, consider leaving them a little longer as their hollow stems provide habitat for winter nesting insects. We cut ours back just when new growth begins to emerge in spring.
