Description

A dwarf Hardy Fountain Grass as cute as its name, 'Piglet' measures at about half the size of its parent 'Hameln,' forming a more compact mound to about a foot high (18 inches in bloom), making him a much better fit for smaller garden spaces and containers. As with its parent, bottlebrush-like spikes of pretty, silvery-white flowers on thin stems rise above upright arching mounds of green leaves during summer and well into fall. When dry, the flowers turn buff and are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. The leaves turn bright golden yellow in fall and remain attractive into winter. Piglet is equally as cold-hardy to 20F.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 18 inches tall in bloom and about 2 feet wide, Piglet hardy Fountain Grass is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers, grouped or as a border where space allows in garden beds, landscape borders, and home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, rock gardens, cut flower gardens, and around garden ponds and other bodies of water.

Spacing:  18 to 24 inches apart for solid groupings; 4 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Pigelt Dwarf Hardy Fountain Grass is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Plants are quite drought-tolerant once established. Maintenance is minimal except for cutting the plant back to near the ground in late winter before new growth emerges.
