Description
Breynia disticha 'Roseo Picta', also known as Red-Leaved Snow Bush or Snow Bush, is a tropical shrub of the Pacific islands adored for its lovely variegated foliage. It forms a rounded bush 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide when growing in the ground, and maybe half that size in a container. It has zig-zagging deep burgundy red stems clothed with a mix of pink young leaves that turn white and bluish-green as if they're speckled with snow, even in a tropical climate. All three colors are simultaneously present on the same bush. In sub-tropical to tropical USDA Zones 9 to 11 climates, it can be grown outdoors year-round as a specimen, grouping, or hedge. North of Zone 9, it is best grown in a container that can be overwintered indoors in sunrooms or other well-lit, relatively humid indoor environments.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Pink Snowbush is ideal for a specimen, grouping, or hedge outdoors in USDA Zones 9-11. North of Zone 9, it is best grown in containers that can be brought indoors to a sunroom or other well-lit, relatively humid indoor space during the winter when temperatures are forecast to drop below 50°F. It is a fine addition to tropical gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 or more feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Snow Bush plants prefer moist, well-drained soil and six or more hours of sunlight daily when growing outdoors in the ground. In containers, plant in a container with a drainage hole(s) filled with a good potting mix or potting soil, or a 5/50 mix of these. We suggest lining the pot's interior with a porous cloth such as landscape fabric or weed barrier to prevent the drainage hole from becoming stopped up with roots. If you need to bring the plant indoors for the winter, keep it in a well-lit, humid space such as a sunroom. It does not like dry indoor spaces, which can cause the plant to defoliate.
