Description

Prized for its tremendous floral display in spring, Rhododendron periclymenoides, commonly called Pinxterbloom Azalea, is a North American native that thrives in shady to partially shaded moisture retentive sites from Massachusetts to South Carolina and Tennessee. Possibly the most profuse bloomer among native azaleas, abundant clusters of soft pink or soft lavender or white, slightly fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers with 5 inch long curved red stamens open just prior to emergence of the leaves.

The common name of "pinxter" means Pentecost (seventh Sunday after Easter) in Dutch, in reference to the bloom time for this shrub.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Pinxterbloom Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in woodland borders or other areas of the landscape that provide dappled shade and moisture retentive soil. That said, plants can tolerate a drier soil. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, Azalea gardens, woodland gardens, native plant gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for natural hedge; 10 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Pinxterbloom Azalea is easy to grow in moisture retentive to moist but well-drained, acidic, humus rich soil...but not a wet one or in standing water. Once established it will tolerate somewhat drier soils. It will tolerate sun in its northern range but definitely needs some afternoon shade in hotter climates further south, where leaves might scorch from direct afternoon sun. Native azaleas are very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, snipping of spent flower clusters is okay and will help to maintain a fuller plant and occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is growing way outside the natural form of the plant, but not so much that it would spoil the form of this beautiful shrub. As with most other azaleas, plants will benefit from mulch, such as shredded wood mulch or pine straw, which help retain moisture and decompose into rich organic matter the plants will appreciate.
