Description

A tiny, if not the tiniest, of Dwarf Alberta Spruce selections, 'Pixie' might reach 18 inches tall and 6 inches wide when all grown up. It has a narrow pyramidal form with dense, dark green needles displaying a prominent show of large, round, bright green foliage buds in spring. A petite, narrow accent for the miniature or fairy garden, rock garden, trough, courtyard or landscape. It grows at a very slow rate of 1 to 3 inches per year and will never require pruning. Extremely cold hardy to -40F. Excellent in pots and garden beds.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing very slowly in a dense and narrow pyramidal form to 18 inches tall and maybe 6 inches wide at the base, the Pixie Dwarf Alberta Spruce is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or containers. Just makes sure the soil is well-drained. Excellent as a miniature outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to conifer gardens, miniature gardens, fairy gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs when established).

Suggested Spacing:  best as a specimen or spaced 12 inches or more apart in groupings

Growing Preferences

Dwarf Alberta Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full sun however in Zones 7b and 8a in the south it will prefer some shade or filtered sun during the middle of the afternoon. Once established water needs are quite low when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
