Description

Commonly called Brass Buttons for the yellow value-like flowers in produces in late spring to early summer, Leptinella squalida 'Platt's Black' is a selection hailing from New Zealand with attractive bronze-purple to near black leaves. Growing to only 2 inches tall but spreading as far as you allow, it forms a dense carpet of attractive, soft and delicate fern-like leaves. Excellent as a border or to fill the gaps between stepping stoves and pavers where it tolerates average foot traffic. A must in black theme gardens!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Spreading to form a solid, carpet-like patch to about 2 inches tall, Platt's Black Brass Buttons is a wonderful choice for garden beds or containers in sunny to partially shaded areas. It is ideal for use as a spreading border along paths and walkways, as a groundcover to fill in around shrubs in home foundation plantings and woodland areas, as an underplanting for shrubs and small trees, between stepping stones, tucked around boulders in rock gardens, or as an accent or soil cover in combination container gardens. A fine addition to black theme gardens!

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass plantings and solid borders

Growing Preferences

Platt's Black Brass Buttons is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. With consistently moist soil it will tolerate full sun, even in the South. Overly dry soils will require supplemental irrigation during drought. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic.
