The Pond Cypress is a lovely and very easy-to-grow North American native tree. How fast and tall it grows will depend on soil moisture. It thrives equally as well in wet soils as it does in dry soils. In boggy sites with constantly moist or wet soil, and even in areas with standing water, it grows faster and can reach heights of 50 to 70 feet with a width of 15 to 20 feet. With less moisture, the growth rate is somewhat slower, and mature heights range from 30 to 40 feet with a 15-foot width.

Description
The Pond Cypress is a lovely and very easy-to-grow North American native tree. How fast and tall it grows will depend on soil moisture. It thrives equally as well in wet soils as it does in dry soils. In boggy sites with constantly moist or wet soil, and even in areas with standing water, it grows faster and can reach heights of 50 to 70 feet with a width of 15 to 20 feet. With less moisture, the growth rate is somewhat slower, and mature heights range from 30 to 40 feet with a 15-foot width.
The Pond Cypress is admired for its soft-textured, overlapping, scale-like, cord-like, and ascending leaves, rather than the descending, flattened leaves characteristic of its cousin, the Bald Cypress. The leaves are blue-grey and put on a spectacular color show in fall when they turn to vibrant orange. Pond Cypress can be grown in average, moist, well-drained soils, but also thrives in wet soils and even standing water. It is very heat-tolerant, disease-free, and insect-resistant. A graceful, soft-textured tree that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow, and a perfect vertical accent tree for smaller landscape spaces. USDA Zones 5a-11.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 30 to 70 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide, the Pond Cypress tree is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings and groves. Highly adaptable, it will thrive in soil with average moisture to wet soils and even standing water, making it a valuable asset for use in swampy areas or near lakes, streams, rivers, or other areas of the landscape where the soil tends to remain moist to wet. It is a fine addition to native plant gardens, bog gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 25 feet or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Being a native tree of North America, the Pond Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and prefers full sun to light shade. It thrives in soils of average moisture, as well as in wet soils or even standing water. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn't necessary; however, selective pruning for shaping is tolerated, or to remove lower branches to expose more of the trunk. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Prune in late winter.
