Description
Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, the Portuguese Laurel is a beautiful large flowering evergreen that can be grown as a large shrub or highly attractive small tree. Its deep rhubarb color stems are clothed in leathery, high-gloss dark green leaves year round. In summer, abundant cylindrical spires up to 10 inches long are packed with small fragrant white flowers followed by cherry-red berries that mature to deep purple. The birds will definitely thank you for the berries gobbling them all up when they're ripe. With no pruning this laurel will grow to about 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide, which is excellent for use in design as an evergreen privacy screen or to frame the corners of homes and other buildings. That said, plants can be maintained at about half those dimensions with an annual pruning. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to a desired height to form a highly attractive small tree. Can also be maintained as a clipped formal hedge or to various topiary shapes such as column or pyramid. Portuguese Laurel is much more sun, wind, heat and humidity tolerant than the Carolina or English laurels and we've seen no insect or disease problems.
Wildlife Value
The Portuguese Laurel is a larval host plant to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. You may see three flights from February-November in the deep south and two flights from May-September in the north.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright from 10 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 15 feet wide depending on pruning, the Portuguese Laurel can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is perfect for use as an evergreen accent in flowering shrub borders, to frame corners of tall homes and other structures, or as a natural or clipped hedge or privacy screen. When lower branches are removed to form a small tree, it becomes a perfect candidate as a focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders or home foundation plantings. Also a good candidate for topiary forms such as a dense column or pyramid. A fine addition to fragrance garden, bird gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, and formal gardens when clipped.
Suggested Spacing: 8' for solid hedges or privacy screens; 21' for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Portuguese Laurel is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. No pruning is necessary however responds very well to pruning for clipped hedges, topiary shapes and tree forming.
