Description
When the spring to early summer flowering perennials are winding their bloom down for the season, the beautiful Prairie Onion, Allium stellatum, is just getting started. From mid-summer through early fall, it features globe-shaped clusters of pretty pink or lavender flowers atop sturdy stems floating above a grassy foliage clump. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will surely notice and feed on the flowers, which are also excellent for cutting and last up to two weeks in a vase. Very easy to grow, Prairie Onion is highly drought tolerant when established, and you might be happy to know the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it. It is a lovely perennial that adds unique flower form and pleasing color and texture to the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide, the Prairie Onion is ideal as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers. It can be planted in groupings or as a border in perennial and herb gardens. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, hummingbird gardens, cut flower gardens, native plant gardens, purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, and rock gardens.
Growing Preferences
Prairie Onion is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. It is highly drought tolerant when established. It will thrive in full sun or part shade. Five or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils.
