Description
A very unusual and distinctive-looking grassy plant in the Sedge family that prefers life on the moist to wet side, 'Prince Tut' is a dwarf Egyptian Papyrus that grows to only half the height of 'King Tut' but with the same large poms atop shorter and stronger stems that are less likely to flop. Though most horticultural sources say the plant is not cold hardy above Zone 10 in the deep South, where no freezing temperatures occur, the plant growing in a pot situated in the margin of our garden pond here in north-central Georgia Zone 8a has reliably returned over a period of many years. At only 24 to 30 inches tall and equally as wide when growing in the ground, or narrower depending on the size of the pot, with its distinctive sparkler-like heads of grassy green pom poms, Prince Tut is sure to add an exotic look to borders or container gardens situated on the patio or in the garden pond.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 30 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide, Prince Tut Papyrus is ideal for use as an accent in consistently moist garden beds and pots, planters and other containers. Containers can be submerged in the garden pond but just make sure not to submerge the pot too deep. Leave one-third to two-thirds of the pot above the water level. A fine addition to container water gardens, bod gardens, garden ponds and moist garden beds and borders.
Growing Preferences
Prince Tut Papyrus is easy to grow and maintain in moist to wet conditions in full sun to part shade. No pruning is required except to remove a damaged or dead stem.
