Description

Finally, a hardy purple fountain grass! Developed by a program at the University of Georgia, Princess Caroline Fountain Grass is an easy-to-grow, moderate to fast-growing perennial grass in USDA Zones 8a through 10b that features intense purple-maroon foliage from summer to frost on large and impressive mounding plants with arching foliage. It has unrivaled texture and color among perennial grasses!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide in an elegant mound of wide, dark purple arching leaves, 'Princess Caroline' Fountain Grass is a superb accent, grouping, or natural hedge for summer color in the sunny landscape borders or large containers. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, the texture and color provide a wonderful contrast when used beside brightly colored flowers, leafy shrubs, trees, and perennial plants. Especially attractive around boulders and bodies of water. In zones where it's an annual, it makes a great centerpiece or background plant in annual flower beds.

Spacing:  30 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Princess Caroline Fountain Grass is easy to grow in most soil types, provided the soil is well-drained. It likes full sun to mostly sun. It's drought-tolerant when established, but it will appreciate some water during extended periods without rain. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Cut foliage back to the ground before new growth emerges in early spring.
