Description
This is the single-trunk tree-form version of the Pumilio Dwarf Swiss Mountain Mugo Pine, also known as the Dwarf Mugo Pine. It is a slow-growing coniferous evergreen shrub with short, dark green needles that provide a unique look and texture in the landscape. Attractive, vertical white "candles" emerge at the tips of every stem in spring, providing more interest. Though not necessary, these candles, which become the new branches, can be pruned up to 50 percent of their length to maintain a smaller, more dense plant. This eye-catching topiary adds much character to any sunny garden space and is destined to be a conversation piece. It is excellent as a specimen for home foundation plantings, rock gardens, patio gardens, and other outdoor living spaces where it will surely draw attention. You'll find detailed but simple Mugo Pine pruning tips here.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 4 to 5 feet tall in a mound 5 to 6 feet wide depending on pruning, the Dwarf Swiss Mountain Pine Topiary Tree is ideal as a unique specimen in small to mid-size spaces or in a container of 16 inches or more in diameter. It is an eye-catching accent in home foundation plantings and on or around patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is also a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, topiary gardens, coastal gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing: Best as a specimen or use twp to frame an entrance.
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf Swiss Mountain Pine is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It grows well in sandy soils and is tolerant of well-draining clay soils. It does not like wet feet, so choose a planting site with very well-drained soil. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots and death of the plant. It is salt-air tolerant and great for coastal gardens. Pruning is not required; however, to maintain its sculptured look, candle pruning done every year or two is advised. How To Prune Junipers & Other Conifers
