Description

As with other mophead Hydrangeas, 'Purple Bayou' flowers can be different colors based on soil conditions. Though this one can be pink in neutral to alkaline soils, we, and obviously the folks who discovered and released this beauty, think it's most unique and beautiful when wearing purple. When the blooms are purple, each flower is adorned with a cute little bright blue eye at the center. To achieve purple, simply plant in acid soil or apply aluminum sulfate to neutral or alkaline soil. Apply pelletized agricultural lime for pink shades. At about 4 feet tall and wide when all grown up, Purple Bayou makes for an eye-catching, colorful specimen in smaller garden spaces and containers or grouped or as a hedge where space allows. Northerners in USDA Zones 5 and 6 can grow this one in sun or part shade, but southerners in Zones 7 through 9 will want to provide some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most intense.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 4 feet tall and equally as wide in a rounded mound, Purple Bayou Hydrangea can be grown in garden beds or containers. It is ideal for use as a specimen or accent in home foundation plantings, flowering shrub borders, and perennial gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is especially dramatic in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a colorful hedge. Its smaller size lends well for use in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to hydrangea gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Purple Bayou Hydrangea is very easy to grow in any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. For best flowering, we suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. As with many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Flower color is your choice. Acidic soil will make purple flowers, and alkaline soil will make pink flowers. Apply aluminum sulfate to acidify soil or agricultural lime tp sweeten soil.

Note:  Purple Bayou is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces flowers from buds formed on "old wood" (during the previous year). This means that even though cutting them back in the winter is tempting when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don't do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don't cut them off if you want flowers.
