Description

Perhaps the easiest to grow, most adaptable, and finest of all Asian-type maples for fall color, the Purple Bloom Korean Maple, Acer pseudosieboldianum var, takesimense, is rare subspecies that was discovered on Ulleungdo Island off the eastern coast Korea. It features some of the largest, most handsome and attractive palm-shaped, 9 to 11 lobed orbicular leaves that emerge soft-green in spring, transitioning to a glossy dark green in summer, and then to amazing fiery shades of red, orange yellow and burgundy in fall! The fall color holds for several weeks longer than the Acer palmatums (Japanese maples). The common name comes from its corymbs of pretty purple flowers in spring that are followed by red winged samaras. Adding about 1 to 2 feet in height depending on climate, it forms an upright natural-looking vase shape with ascending branches 20 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 18 feet wide at the top, which makes it a fine specimen for use in small or large size landscape spaces or as an accent tree in home foundation plantings. Super hardy and adaptable, it will thrive in full sun or mostly shade and is humidity and cold tolerant to -30F. A uniquely ornamental and desirable rarity that provides tremendous beauty and a tropical look in the landscape, this one is sure to be a captivating conversation piece.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Purple Bloom Korean Maple is best used as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant them in groupings of three or use to frame an entryway.

Suggested Spacing:  At least 20 feet apart for space between trees over the long term

Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won't interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

The Purple Bloom Korean Maple is exceptionally easy to grow in most any most but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to mostly shade. The best fall foliage colors might occur with more sun. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight or all-day filtered sun. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your in a well-drained site.
