Description
A North American native grass plant with an extraordinary range of seasonal color and texture, Purple Lovegrass is easy-to-grow almost anywhere in the country. In mid to late summer airy clouds of rosy purple flowers rise about a foot or so above a 12 inch tall open mound of arching blue-green, soft-textured grassy foliage. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the foliage develops a bronze red color with buff color seed heads floating above. Flourishing in dry, sandy or gravelly and infertile soil and sunny areas, Purple Love Grass is one you can plant and pretty much forget about once established. It even flourishes on roadsides that receive winter salt. Its rhizomatous roots make it a superb candidate for erosion control on slopes.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and spreading up to 3 feet wide, Purple Lovegrass is ideal for use as a border along natural paths and walkways or in groupings or massed in landscape border and on embankments, hillsides and slopes for erosion control. It is a nice filler plant in ornamental grass gardens and native plant gardens. The flowers are great for that delicate, airy touch in dried flower arrangements. A fine addition to native plant gardens, purple theme gardens, ornamental grass gardens, wildlife gardens, rock gardens and meadow and prairie gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18-24" apart for mass plantings

Growing Preferences
Purple Lovegrass is very easy to grow in well-drained moist to dry soils of poor to average fertility and full to mostly sun. It prefers a sandy or rocky loam in dry locations. Has very good drought resistance when established. We've seen no problems with insects or diseases. Plants can be cut back to just above the ground before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or early spring. Will freely self sow where happy. Seed heads can be trimmed off the plant to prevent self-sowing.
