Description
Adored for its stately and beautiful presence in the shade garden, Polemonium yezoense 'Purple Rain', commonly known as Jacob's Ladder, is a lovely plant in both foliage and flower. It forms a clump af soft-textured, ferny, ladder-like, deep bronze-purple leaves from which rise tall, sturdy, dark purple stems topped with clusters of pretty, violet-purple flowers that are 1 inch across, which the butterflies will appreciate. The evergreen foliage does become more greenish during the summer and fall, but goes back to bronze-purple in winter and spring. If spent flowers are deadheaded, the plant will often rebloom. Polemonium 'Purple Rain Strain' will usually repeat bloom if deadheaded. Purple Rain Jacob's Ladder is excellent for growing in shady garden beds and containers situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the plant and the butterflies feeding on the flowers can be enjoyed up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 2 feet tall and around 18 inches wide, Purple Rain Jacob's Ladder is ideal as an accent in shady, smaller gardens spaces, or in groupings in woodland and shaded perennial borders. It is a fine addition to cottage gardens, woodland gardens, blue theme gardens, and shady rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for groupings; 3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Purple Rain Jacob's Ladder is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils of average or better fertility and partial to full shade. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight. It performs best in rich, humusy soil.
