Description
A new weeping selection of our beautiful North American native Redbud tree, 'Purple Rain' is a more vigorous, faster grower than other weeping cultivars, and at 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, its smaller size makes it a good fit for small to medium size landscape beds and home foundation plantings. It has sturdy weeping branches that arch over and "rain" down to the ground. The branches are covered in vibrant, rosy-pink flowers before the foliage emerges in spring. After flowering, the beautiful heart-shaped leaves emerge a dark purple color. By summer, the leaves turn purple-tinted green. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall, the leaves turn to bright yellow for yet another color show. Highly adaptable, heat and cold tolerant (-20F), and easy to grow in most any well-drained soil and sun or partial shade, Purple Rain is a spectacular specimen around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where its colorful flowers and foliage can be enjoyed from close up. Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Purple Rain Weeping Redbud tree is ideal for use as a focal specimen in sunny or partially shaded landscapes or woodland borders or as an accent tree in home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance. It is very lovely around outdoor sitting and living spaces. They are a fine addition to pink theme gardens, pollinator gardens, and native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or use 2 to frame an entryway. If grouped, we recommend spacing at least 10 feet apart.
Growing Preferences
The Purple Rain Weeping Redbud tree is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun. It has good drought tolerance when established. Redbud trees do NOT like waterlogged soil, so plant in a well-draining area. No pruning is required, though a stray or damaged branch can be removed at any time of year.
