The Purple Stem Great Angelica is a North American native flowering biennial plant that provides the closest thing to what could be called a "fireworks show" in the garden. It will surely not go unnoticed. When grown in consistently moist soil, it forms a lush mound of green foliage from which rise tall, thick purple stalks towering 9 feet high that are topped with several branched stems bearing large fireworks-like flower clusters up to 10 inches across bearing white to greenish-white pompom-like flowers. The bloom season, or fireworks show, begins in early summer and continues through early fall, which butterflies and many other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Since it prefers moist soil conditions and has such an impressive stature, it's a perfect plant for adding an imposing presence to sunny or partially shaded garden areas. It is especially nice as a stately sentinel around streams, creeks, ponds, and other bodies of water.

Purple Stem Angelica is a host plant for swallowtail butterflies and a nectar source for many other pollinators. Birds will feast on the seeds if the spent flowers are left on the plants.
